Mastering the Art of Email List Maintenance
In 2023, I more than doubled my email open rates and click rates with a simple but often overlooked strategy: I cleaned my list!
If your emails are suffering from low open rates, click rates, and high bounce rates, it’s time to take action. Cleaning your list will help send more emails to an engaged audience, leading to more leads.
Let’s dive into it!
Cleaning your email list is a crucial yet often underappreciated aspect of successful email marketing. Here are five compelling reasons to prioritize it:
Not all subscribers on your email list are the same. Some are actively engaged and eagerly await your content, while others may have lost interest or their email accounts might have become inactive.
Here’s how you can tell if your email list needs cleaning and the steps to do it:
Start by identifying subscribers who haven’t opened or clicked on your emails in the last 90 days. These inactive subscribers are prime candidates for list cleaning. In ConvertKit, they are called “Cold Subscribers.” I had 225 before I sent this email.
Segment these cold subscribers and add them to a re-engagement campaign. This campaign will send a series of emails asking the subscriber to opt back into receiving emails from you. Use persuasive subject lines, personalized content, and special offers if applicable.
Create a three-email sequence:
Email 1: Check in and offer a choice. Acknowledge their decreased engagement and reaffirm your commitment to providing valuable information. Offer them an option to continue receiving emails with a clickable link.
Email 2: Remind them of your value. Highlight how your content can help them solve their problems and offer a sneak peek at upcoming content.
Email 3: Say goodbye. If the subscriber hasn’t re-engaged by this point, it’s time to remove them from your list.
Monitor the results of your re-engagement campaign. You’d be surprised how many people come back!
Whether they re-engage or not, it’s a win-win. If they jump back on the list, great! If they don’t, your email metrics improve.
Cleaning your email list might seem daunting, but it’s essential for boosting engagement, increasing open rates, and saving money. Above all, it helps create a quality email list that values and interacts with your content.
So, don’t hesitate. Start cleaning now and enjoy the remarkable benefits for your email marketing campaigns. Quality trumps quantity every time.
