Is Your Social Media Game Falling Behind?

A laggard is someone who moves slowly and falls behind. For small business owners who shy away from social media, this term is particularly fitting. Social media is no longer a novelty; it’s a vital tool for marketing. Yet, some business owners still hesitate to dive in, often feeling overwhelmed by the numerous platforms and unsure where to start. However, plenty of resources are available to help them.

Laggards tend to watch and wait, often resisting change until they have no choice but to adapt. Being “forced” to change is hardly ideal. It’s much better to take control and choose how to adapt.

In my experience, fear is a major reason why laggards resist change. Change brings uncertainty, which can be scary. Risk, change, failure, and success are all interconnected. If you’re not willing to embrace these elements, you might find yourself stuck while others move ahead.

Fear itself isn’t bad. It’s a sign that we have the opportunity to make meaningful changes. Fear pushes us out of our comfort zones and into new possibilities, including potential success and valuable learning experiences.

So, how do you get past the fear and embrace change? One effective method is to educate yourself as much as possible. Understanding what you’re getting into helps you prepare and visualize both success and failure. Once you have the information, trust the process and see where it takes you.

Change is rarely easy, but the benefits can outweigh the difficulty. The fear of regret—of not moving forward, of not trying new things, of being left behind—can be greater than the fear of change itself. Ultimately, it’s about deciding which fear will drive you to take action.
