Budget-Friendly Getaways in Southern California for a Weekend

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, and the long President’s Day weekend arriving soon, I started thinking of budget-friendly weekend getaways in southern California. Eric and I love these affordable weekend trips. Since we have no kids, we often take off on spontaneous adventures, leaving our beloved pet with our parents.

We always strive to make the most of these economical escapes, treating them like mini-vacations even though we need to be back to work on Monday. Here are some budget-friendly getaways you might want to try in southern California:

San Diego
San Diego has a lot to offer – a vibrant nightlife, fancy dining, peaceful spas, and a relaxed beach atmosphere. Spend a day wandering around Old Town State Park, known as the birthplace of California. Try out the local Mexican restaurants, famous for their large margaritas and fresh tortillas. For a great night out, visit the Gas Lamp District with its many restaurants and bars. A day trip to the famous San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, or the USS Midway Museum is definitely worth it.

Temecula
A weekend of wine tasting in Temecula will leave you feeling as refreshed as a week-long vacation. This area, resembling a smaller Napa Valley, is welcoming and charming. Wine tasting here is laid-back and enjoyable for everyone, from beginners to experts. After a day of tasting, you’ll probably want to rest early, but if you’re up for it, Old Town Temecula offers nightlife, hot air balloon rides, and spa experiences at South Coast Winery.

Los Angeles
Though LA’s traffic and pollution might be off-putting, exploring the city as a tourist can be fun. Spend a day in Hollywood and Highland, tour the stars’ homes, attend a TV show taping, and maybe have a drink at a celebrity hotspot like The Standard or Roosevelt Hotel.

Las Vegas
If you’re from southern California, you likely know the excitement of Vegas. To beat the Friday rush, try to leave work a bit early.

Big Bear
Leave the city behind and soak in the peace and quiet of Big Bear. Whether you enjoy skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer, the mountains are a welcoming retreat.

Catalina Island
For the best deal, pick a package that includes both transportation and a hotel. This charming island offers a slice of southern California’s version of Martha’s Vineyard.

Santa Ynez Valley
If you’ve already checked out Temecula, give the Santa Ynez Valley a try with its numerous wineries in Los Olivos and Solvang – an extension of the Santa Barbara wine region.

Santa Barbara
This delightful town is a perfect spot for a peaceful escape. With a rich history and a lively downtown area, Santa Barbara guarantees a pleasant experience.
