Four Reasons Why Your Business Lacks Support from Family and Friends
Entrepreneurship is challenging. The long hours and tough decisions often require a solid support system of family and friends. But what happens when that support suddenly vanishes? No one is buying from you, and no one is sharing your Facebook page. It starts to feel very lonely.
Before venting frustrations on social media, consider why your friends and family might not be supporting your business. When I was an insurance agent for a big company, my mentor warned me that selling to family and friends is tougher than selling to strangers. They remember all your past ventures, whether it was selling cars, makeup, or insurance. Winning them over this time requires more effort.
This doesn’t mean you can only do one thing in life—serial entrepreneurship can be fulfilling. But understand that some people prefer to wait and see if your new business succeeds before they jump in.
Your family and friends might have limited funds. Instead of making them feel bad for not making a purchase, think of non-monetary ways they can help. Liking your business page or helping pack products are valuable contributions too.
Not everyone needs what you’re selling. For instance, if you’re in the pogo stick business, no amount of loyalty will make me buy a pogo stick if I have no use for it, even if I love you dearly. This doesn’t make me a bad friend.
No one is obligated to support your business. They don’t owe you anything, and while it’s disappointing, it’s important to respect their choices. Recognize that not everyone has to join you on your entrepreneurial journey.
