Staying Fit Without a Gym Membership

Staying Fit Without a Gym Membership

With gyms being closed for quite a while recently, many of us joked about constantly raiding the fridge while working from home. But kidding aside, it’s crucial to prioritize our health and fitness. Without good health, even simple daily tasks and achieving our goals can become tough.

Although gyms are starting to reopen, it’s important to realize that we don’t need a gym membership to stay fit. I’ve been on a break from my gym subscription, exploring different ways to stay active. Here are a few options to help you maintain your fitness without a gym.

CREATE A SOLID WORKOUT ROUTINE
Just like I plan my work and freelance activities, I also set a regular workout schedule. I usually exercise in the mornings or during lunch breaks, and sometimes in the evenings with my husband. Without a gym membership, you have the flexibility to plan workouts that fit your lifestyle. If you like structured group classes, create your own routine and put it on your calendar. Being consistent is key.

Writing down my daily workout goals in my planner helps me stay committed. On days when I lack motivation, even a 20-minute workout can make a difference. Often, just starting the workout helps.

USE FREE WORKOUT VIDEOS AND APPS
To build muscle and tone up, I often use free workout videos on YouTube. There’s a huge variety of free resources and tips available. I also use the Nike+ Training Club app, which offers personalized training sessions for free. The app has different programs led by Nike Master Trainers and pro athletes, letting you tailor a weekly plan based on your time and goals.

INVEST IN BASIC FITNESS EQUIPMENT
A downside of not going to the gym is missing out on the vast equipment options. However, I make do with basic equipment I already have, like a resistance band, a medicine ball, and a speed rope for quick cardio sessions.

LEARNING TO APPRECIATE RUNNING
Running is one of the simplest ways to stay fit without spending money, but it’s not something I’ve always enjoyed. I’m looking into other cardio options like dancing or Zumba. Having the right shoes can make running more comfortable and tolerable, especially for beginners.

KEEP MOVING
Staying active is the easiest way to stay fit without a gym membership. I use a FitBit to track my activity, but a pedometer app on your phone can work just as well. I aim for at least 10,000 steps a day and often challenge myself to go beyond. Walking, playing outdoor sports, or biking are great ways to keep moving and stretching regularly.

As you can see, there are many ways to stay fit without needing a gym membership. Whether you prefer going to a gym or working out at home comes down to personal preference.
