Traveling can get pretty expensive, especially when it comes to where you stay. But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to find a great place without breaking the bank. Here are some tips on how to book affordable accommodations:

AirBnB
If you haven’t tried AirBnB yet, you’re missing out on budget-friendly options. Through AirBnB, you can rent a room, condo, or even a house from locals. It’s usually cheaper than traditional hotels or bed-and-breakfasts because the service level is more relaxed. For example, it could be someone’s home who’s renting out extra rooms while their kids are away at college. Besides a bed and a bathroom, everything else is up to you. AirBnB is great for snagging deals, especially with discounts on longer stays.

Craigslist Swap
Craigslist has a section for housing where you can set up house swaps, either temporary or long-term. Just be careful and do your research to avoid any issues. For instance, when my spouse and I were newly married and on a tight budget, we swapped our apartment for a family’s cabin in the mountains. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but we didn’t have much to lose. House swapping is perfect if you’re adventurous, short on cash, and looking for a quick getaway. Just make sure everyone is clear on the boundaries.

CouchSurfing
CouchSurfing is a popular choice among young travelers looking to save money. It’s cheaper than AirBnB because you’re often just getting a place to sleep, not a whole room. While it might not be the best option for solo female travelers, it can feel safer if you’re with someone else. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re on a tight budget, it’s hard to beat the price.

Priceline
If you prefer a traditional hotel and the other options don’t appeal to you, check out Priceline. With Priceline’s Negotiator tool, you can name your price for a hotel room, choose the star rating, and the area you’d like to stay in. While you won’t get to pick the exact hotel, you can often get a great deal. My partner and I have used this method multiple times, landing four-star hotels for just $100 a night.
