Ongoing Surge in Online Purchases Persists

ComScore announced on Sunday that early December is defying the usual lull in U.S. holiday shopping, with strong online spending figures. In the first week of December, consumers spent about $5.9 billion online, marking a 15% increase compared to last year. Events like Cyber Monday and Black Friday played a significant role in boosting these figures, with Cyber Monday alone setting a record at $1.2 billion.

Initially, there were concerns that high sales at the start of the season might lead to a drop in early December, but those fears were unfounded. The latest data indicates that holiday shopping could finish strongly.

The upcoming week is generally the busiest for online retailers. In fact, eBay coined the term Green Monday back in 2007 to describe the Monday of the second week of December, which is typically one of the busiest online shopping days. For six years in a row, Green Monday has been one of the peak days for spending during the holiday season.
